SUMMARY: strange arp

Greetings!

My shortened original posting:

One quick way to find the MAC addresses of all the devices on
a subnet from a Sun is

        % ping 198.64.240.255
        % arp -a

My problem is that the above gives inconsistent results if
used repeatedly in a short period of time. Is anybody else
  seeing the same and why?

Many thanks to

        Eckhard.Rueggeberg@ts.go.dlr.de (Eckhard Rueggeberg)
stern@sunrise.East.Sun.COM (Hal Stern - NE Area Systems Engineer)
        dal@gcm.com (Dan Lorenzini)

who suggested that the inconsistency may be due to the way the arp
cache is hashed. Both dal@gcm.com and stern@sunrise.East.Sun.COM
recommended pinging each machine to find all the MAC addresses.
