Good news! There is a simple solution and it works:
Make sure dns is specified in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file the line is:
hosts: nis dns [NOTFOUND=return] files
Also make sure you have resolv.conf and defaultrouter in /etc
NOTE: You may have to reboot your machine to make it recognize the new
settings.
