Hi sun manager folks,

thanks to Pedro Roque (roque@di.fc.ul.pt) for a swift reply,

> inet 34.2.40.150 netmask fffffc00 broadcast 34.2.43.255
> ether 8:0:20:1c:5:a

Pedro pointed out the ease of configuring hardware address if intruders are trying to spoof, bugs,
and 2 ethernets with the same address. ( a sun feature here is that two ethernets in the same box
will have the same mac address ).

solution appears to be more prosaic. the Coms guys rechecked the cabling, and, sure enough,
the cable into the inteligent routing/bridging HUB was loose. When given a fresh port the
error messages continued for another two hours, but then completely disappeared.

I have today applied the jumbo patch set from the maintenace CD volume 1 - hopefully fixing any
left over OS bugs.
