Special thanks to Larry Miller. Larry, the disk information you sent
worked fine. I also thank the others for mentioning other tools like
scsiping and general education on scsiinfo. I had one other difficulty,
not mentioned in my original query. I had to attach this disk to a sun3/60
and none of the tools like scsiinfo or scsiping work on that architecture.
When I had earlier tried scsiinfo on a sun4 machine on a different disk,
it did not have a label and was not approximately formatted. I didn't
realise that was necessary for scsiinfo to work. Thanks for the education.
Here's my original question followed by the answers. Special thanks to

I'm not sure this is the one, but this is what I have:
disk_type = "Quantum GoDrive 160S" \
: ctlr = MD21 \
: ncyl = 1413 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 1415 : nhead = 4 : nsect = 58 \
: rpm = 3600 : bpt = 29696

How about scsiping? Especially if you use the raw device, instead of the cooked device?

You have to put *some* label on the drive (even if it is not correct) before you can use scsiinfo. Could that have been why it didn't work?

It may not help, but one trick I heard to do is to just pick any arbitrary (reasonably close) format.dat entry and just format it using that. *Then* try scsiinfo to query the drive for the real parameters and reformat using those parameters. Apparently, scsiinfo has trouble with the OS not letting it get at the drive until it has a label (which is of course what you're trying to get with scsiinfo).
