Hi,
I've got a couple Sparc 1's, (sun4c) that I am about to upgrade to
 Sparc 10's (sun4m).....

Can I do this without having to re-install the OS???

If I swap in a boot file, and kernel, will everything else fall into
place....????

Me thinks I could save alot of time, or am I just a pipe-dreamer?
********************************************************************
This was a fun one, especially since I included the part about being a
pipe-dreamer.. You can imagine what kinda comments that statement alone
created.

SPECIAL THANKS TO:
Keny Talarico, John Benjamins & Mike Raffety
for saying they had done it and afirming what files.

With all the other messages that had come in, I had resigned myself to the
fact that it couldn't be done. Thanks to him saying he had done it, I knew
I could too.

As for the answer: YES you can, total time to upgrade: 5 minutes,
total down-time for user: 5 minutes.

I figure I saved about 5 hrs. per machine by doing it this way.

Most of it is done with the user on-line.. Too cool.

Details:
        get /vmunix, /boot, /kadb and the /usr/kvm tree from another Sun4m
        machine.

I just tarred up /usr/kvm and then untarred it on the Sparc 1.

I then took the machine down to single user mode, copied the
afforementioned files over the original's, ran /usr/kvm/mdec/installboot,
and halted the machine. Then swap in the new Box, attach your
perpheripherals and boot it up..

That's it...

As for the respondents, Thanks for your input... The answers ranged from:

YOU ARE A PIPE-DREAMER (MOST RESPONDENTS)
I Tried it and couldn't get it to work
should work
I wouldn't risk it
No way to do this
