I got 2 responses; probably this Seagate disk in not so popular
in the Sun/Unix world.
But I was able to use scsiinfo to generate the format.dat with no
problems at all after creating a bogus partition.
--------------------------------------------------------------
However; Cyril Plisko was correct when he responded:

I am not sure, but looks like you faced the same problem that once I did.
You see, scsiinfo cannot generate format.dat if it cannot access disk.
And to accessing disk properly you should create at least one partition
on the disk. It is not important whether U set correct parametrs fot disk or
not.
Once disk is accessable scsiinfo generates correct format.dat and you can
reset
parametrs and reformat disk and _do_what_you_want_to_do_with_your_disk_.

Hope this will help.
Cyril.

The other response recommended using scsiping instead of scsiinfo
I'll try that for future generation of format.dats.
I apologize to the second respondant because I lost his message
and won't be able to mention his name here.

here is the format.dat if anyone is interested:

disk_type = "SEAGATE ST3655N" \
        : ctlr = SCSI : fmt_time = 2 \
        : trks_zone = 5 : atrks = 0 : asect = 1 \
        : ncyl = 2595 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 2493 : nhead = 5 : nsect = 82 \
        : rpm = 4500 : bpt = 48216

partition = "SEAGATE ST3655N" \
        : disk = "SEAGATE ST3655N" : ctlr = SCSI \
        : a = 0, 24600 : b = 60, 164000 : c = 0, 1063950 : d = 460, 506350 :
g = 1695, 369000

Again many thanks to those who responded.
