Many thanks to all who responded.

The correct answer was that a previous sysadmin had used the
TCP Wrapper executable (ie. tcpd) in place of the normal in.rlogind
invocation.

Ron Hall <thorn@cc.mcgill.ca> was first to suggest this to me.

Also suggested was that the user's .cshrc file could have a stty
command in it or was trying to write to the tty.

Another couple of people suggested that I look at the inetd.conf
file again, because small format errors had bedeviled them before.

thanks to the others who replied (and to any who reply after SUMMARY):

Hello fellow managers,

Another group asked me about a rlogin problem they are having.
They can use their machine "delta" to rlogin to other machines,
but no other machine can rlogin to "delta".

        rlogin delta
        Protocol error, delta closed connection

"delta" is running SunOS 4.1.2.
The inetd.conf looks normal, the permissions on in.rlogind are correct.
netstat -a shows *.login in LISTEN state

I have been searching the SUN WAIS archives, but have not found anything
yet.

I would appreciate any help someone can offer on this problem.
