Sorry, folks, this was mostly a false alarm. I also apologize for sending
my query out twice. The second was a mistake from trying to include my
original message in the summary.
Basically, I had forgotten to terminate the 7213S drive in each machine.
They had had their terminating resistor power jumpers removed when they were
in use in server machines that had external drives. I post this with the
hope that it will help someone else down the road.
Sorry about that,

My original query:
System setup: Sun Sparc 1, 16MB RAM, Maxtor 213S drive (the only hard drive
installed), Solaris 1.1.1 (SUNOS 4.1.3_U1)
Problem: I installed Solaris 1.1.1 on the above system from scratch (not
Sunupgrade) with modules root,usr,kvm,install,networking,sunview_users,
sunview_programmers,security,graphics,sys. I told suninstall to reboot
after the installation was complete. It did, no problems. I installed
local changes on these machines as I did on 60 other Sparcstations (with the
notable difference that the 60 stations had two Quantum 104 drives and no
Maxtor drives!), and now the three systems with Maxtor drives will not boot
at all. The message 'Booting from sd(0,0,0)vmunix' is displayed, then the
systems appear to lock. No 'live' character is displayed, nor is the size
of SUNOS. I checked the PROM settings and compared to systems that boot
correctly, no go. Any ideas, folks? Suggestions welcome. A summary will
follow when I get the answer.
Thanks in advance,
