Hi,

Surprisingly I haven't heard from anybody but we managed
to run an experiment ourselves exchanging tar files on
4mm DAT tapes beetween Sun's and DEC AXP machines running
OSF/1. I have just verified, that writing and reading
works in both directions, however you'll need SunOS 4.1.3
in order to be able to read a tar files written by the
DEC machine. We failed doing it with SunOS 4.1.2.
The DAT drive in the Sun was actually an HP drive.

The only thing I noticed on the DEC machine reading
a tar file using "tar tvf" from a Sun was that for normal files,
the first character in the permission string indicating
the file type showed always a '?'. Symbolic links and
directories were ok. When actually restoring using "tar xvf"
the files are created properly however, so I don't think
this causes any problems.
