         Thanks for replies so far.
         
         PROBLEM SOLVED!!
         
         Rebooting the machine did not help, but recreating the pty devs
         did.
         
         It now works.
         
         I still can't understand how ALL the pty devs when bad. But if it
         worls, don't fix it.
