Folks,

What a response!

The basic answer is that the files from the Info-ZIP Project are
PKZIP compatible and will do the job. There seems to be a bit
of confusion about whether GNU's "gzip/gunzip" utility will
work on PKZIP compacted files. The answer, as far as I can tell, is
that the GNU gzip utility can READ these archives quite well.

>From the MAN page on "gzip":

        gunzip can currently decompress files created by gzip, zip,
        compress, compress -H or pack. The detection of the input
        format is automatic.

EXTRACTION, on the other hand, depends on how they were created.
Again, from the MAN page:

        Files created by zip can be uncompressed by gzip only if
        they have a single member compressed with the 'deflation'
        method. This feature is only intended to help conversion of
        tar.zip files to the tar.gz format. To extract zip files
        with several members, use unzip instead of gunzip.

Roger,

I have been using (but not often) a version on unzip on my IPX which seems to
work just fine when I do try it. Here is the "Where" file which came with it.
There may be further versions/patches available for it - I don't know.

I don't know of anything on the net, but Unix Central sells a Pkzip
compatible that works pretty well for $87 single user, $495 unlimited users.

Check wuarchive.wustl.edu down the /systems/ibmpc path. Somewhere down
there is a 'zip' directory. It includes a zip and unzip (as two
separate files) that include source code. Will run on UNIX, MS-DOS,
you get the idea.

Theres GNUzip, which claims to be able to handle zip files. There was also a zip posted to alt.sources a ways back that was pretty ugly-- it worked like a dos app, spewing all sorts of useless information, but I suspect it was 100% pczip compatible.

you'll get *lots* of answers for this one, i'm sure. :) info-zip's unzip 5.0 (pl 1) and zip 1.9, both available in the comp.sources.misc archives. i haven't used the zip utility much, but unzip works wonderfully (although there's a trick to compiling it under Solaris 2.x with gcc).

Use Info-ZIP, which is PKZIP 2.04 compatible. It is available using anonymous ftp from pip.shsu.edu:/pub/archiving/zip in the files zip201.zip and unz50p1.tar.Z (the ZIP and UNZIP sources). I think these are the latest versions, and is ported to several UNIX platforms, and DOS.
