My original question was:

I finally found out that the problem was being caused by Dialup PPP v.2.3
which we were running on our system. It seems to eat away at mbufs, but only
occasionally under some circumstances which we haven't been able to determine.
After shutting it down and starting it up a day later the problem hasn't
recurred. When the next release that runs on SunOS 4.1.3 comes out we'll
switch to that and see if the bug is fixed.
