Hello sun managers,

        Original query:

Amit Bhatiani bhatiani@jpmorgan.com says:

This will give you the speed at which your cpu is running.
However, devinfo will also give that information but with a lot more
info on all devices on the system. Further, a model 30 jumped to
use the clock on the cpu module will return 40 MHz like devinfo.

kevin@uniq.com.au (Kevin Sheehan {Consulting Poster Child}) says:
>Doesn't hostid+/usr/include/machine/cpu.h give you the right answer?
>Hostid returns the contents of the id prom, part of which is the one

I did not investigate this possibility because the hostid is
burned into a chip which is not on the cpu module. So if you change
the cpu module this can't reflect the new module because hostid does
not change.

Some people said that the cpu will likely "fry" itself at
that speed. The real question is: "Did Sun always had only one
chip and sold it in two diffenrent format (by only changing the
part number) or is there a real technical difference ???" This might
be only a marketing scheme. So far, no one was able to answer this.

For myself, I have "free upgraded" 3 SPARC 10s model 30
to 40 MHz and they have been running fine for the last two weeks.

The way to tell if your module was intend by Sun to run at
36 or 40 MHz is to look at the part number:

        - model 30 = 501-2239
        - model 40 = 501-2259 or 501-2353 or 501-2358

In any case, I've been asked to post the jumper settings to
"free upgrade" to a model 40 so here it goes:

If you have the old main board, it looks like that:
                ( Legend: O means no jumper )
                ( # means jumper on )

                               FRONT
        +---------------------------------------------------+
        | +---------------------+ |
        | | SIMM | |
        | | Slots | |
        | | | |
        | | | |
        | +---------------------+ |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | J1404 |
        | O |
        | # |
        | # |
        | J1401 |
        | OO J1403 |
        | ##O |
        | |
        | |
        +---------------------------------------------------+
                               BACK

Basically, remove J1401 and move 1403 and 1404.

         ===================================================

If you have the more recent main board, it looks like that:
                ( Legend: O means no jumper )
                ( # means jumper on )

                               FRONT
        +---------------------------------------------------+
        | +---------------------+ |
        | | SIMM | |
        | | Slots | |
        | | | |
        | | | |
        | +---------------------+ |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        | J1401 |
        | O## |
        | |
        | |
        | |
        +---------------------------------------------------+
                               BACK

        Basically, just move J1401.
