I built a new version of gzip on SunOS 4.1.3/Sparc, re-ftp'ed the
x86 binaries, and all is well. Either I did something stupid, or the
gzip for x86 I ftp'ed from nic.funet.fi was buggy, or it was damaged in
transit.
Thanks to those of you who provided advice.

I ftp'ed a gzip binary for solarix/x86 from nic.funet.fi, which seems to work.
I ftp'ed gcc binaries from :
thor.ece.uc.edu
ftp.warwick.ac.uk
but each of them gives tar directory checksum errors. Yes I ftp'ed in
binary mode!
Can someone point me to a clean gcc for solarix/86 ????
