Thanks to all those who responded

The general opinion was DONT BOTHER!
but I did get one possible source for SMD->SCSI devices

I found a few shops down in LA that would give me an interface for about
$400,
I can give those to you if you are interested. (I've got a Fujitsu HSMD
823.9 megger I can't use!)... generally it is cheaper to just go with
a new unit.

If all else fails, call the drive manufacturer and see what they say.
Most
of them have suggestions on how to deal with older technology.

good luck!

However this probably sums up best most peoples ideas

Those old SMD drives need oodles of power and an airconditioned
environment. They're huge, not particularly fast, and they must be
getting pretty close to the end of their design lifetimes. Not to
mention the fact that the nineteen inch racks they live in are bulky,
and that the drives themselves are noisy as jackhammers.

Pitch those boat anchors and buy some 3.5" drives. With current new
drive (with warrantees!) prices below $1/MByte, there is no reason on
the planet to saddle yourself with elaborate kluges to run clunky old
drives. You can replace (for example) a Fuji Eagle for less than
$300. If you can't afford that, you can't afford to run the Eagle,
much less buy the bridge adaptor.

regards,
Ross
