Check your /etc/exports file.... for an entry like this:
/usr -anon-0 it should look like
/usr -anon=0

We have seen the anonymous reserved memory drop continuously and go negative on
our SPARC2 machines running SunOS 4.1.x (where x=1,2 or 3). It happened when we
ran a large memory-hungry program which made heavy use of scratch files in
/tmp. We filed a bug report and it turned out to be a bug in the tmpfs system.
To be fair, Sun were pretty quick at developing a patch and we've had no
trouble since then. I'm afraid I don't know anything about 690 servers
specifically and I don't recall having problems at boot time as you describe,
but if you are using tmpfs, I recommend patch no. 100507. I have 100507-04 but
I don't know if there is a later version fixing any extra bugs. I enclose the
top of the README below. I hope it helps.
