It turns out that card just needed to be reseated. I took the card out, put
the card back in, and reboot. The console works now. Sun told me that if
something mysterious like this happens again, then I should try reseating the
cards first.
Many people sent good suggestions but all turned out to be blind allies.
Most of the people told be to check that the input and output device in
eeprom were set to ttya. This was the first thing I checked before sending
my original post. A couple people suggested that 'xconsole' or 'xterm -C'
might have taken control, no such luck. One person wanted to know what
'xconsole' is - it comes with X11R5. Several people suggested I check the
fuses on the system board, I did they were fine.
