After all was said and done, I used Jeff Tate's uuencoded
instructions to start from scratch. That's what worked. Most
of the responses centered around checking permissions and
running ttysoftcar (both of which were not the problem, at least

I have a similar set up, and while I don't know the "correct" methode
for freeing the ports. The most I've had to do is reboot the machine.
I've never been forced to completly reload the OS!
Please let me know if you find out the "approved" methode for clearing

if yes replace on to off and kill -1 1
2. do ttysoftcar -n /dev/OUTDEVICE
and for the hell of it /dev/INDEVICE
3. if you need dialin edit back /etc/ttytab and kill -1 1

I think your problem is in the modem. Try this (say on a terminal or PC
connected to the modem, or edit /etc/ttytab and turn off the login on that
port, remember to kill -1 1 ).

What's happening is the getty is sending a charactor string (xxx login:) and
the modem's echoing it back, which makes getty think someone's trying to login.
This process goes on forever. You may be able to set Q to 2 with causes
the modem to report status only on dialouts. If your modem supports this option
use it.

If you still get rd and sd flickering, your modem is asserting CD when
it shouldn't, like all the time (should only be on when another modem
is attached). If so, ou'll need to do step 1 again (turn off getty) and tip
to the modem and reprogram the modem.
If it's ok, then the problem was: 1. you didn't have "remote" in ttytab,
and maybe 2. you had ttysoftcar set to yes.
Aren't modems fun? :-)

I had the same problem with my system and it turned out to be
a permissions problem. You need to verify that the tip process and the
uucp directories to make sure that they are owned by uucp. I think that
the /dev/ttyb port should be owned by uucp also. You could check these
permissions against the station you tried the modem on that worked correctly
