As many of you suggested, this was a hardware problem. Apparently some
revision levels of the SuperSPARC module are not compatible with the 600MP
series. (The sad thing is that no-one on the Sun support lines I talked to
knew this)

We swapped the processor 5 days ago and haven't had a watchdog reset since.
(Of course it's too early to tell, but it looks promising - for a while we
were having one watchdog per day!)

Thanks,

Shumon.

This isn't a software problem. Its a hardware problem. We've been
experiencing the same problems after we installed a Model 51 processor
in our 4/690. Call Sun, and have them send you an 51 module that
is the proper revision level (version?) for the 4/6xx machines.

We just got ours today, so I'm not sure if it actually fixes the
watchdog reset problem, but I should know in the next day or so.

Let me know if you want more information....

Same problem that I had after upgrading to 50MHz Viking from 4 Cypress chips
on a 670. I assume that you upgrading the bootproms. Since we are under
Sun maintenance, I've been having parts swapped out. Two weeks ago, they
swapped out the processor with a slightly newer processor (still a model 51)
and it has not had a watchdog reset since. Of course, two weeks isn't
quite long enough to tell for sure, but since we had up to three resets in
two days I believe the problem is fixed.

The repair guy did mention that there was a problem with the earlier model
51's
in a 600 (I believe he was talking about a 690).

Hope this helps,
Corey

I don't have any experience with any of the model 51 Suns, however, I've had
a Sun 670 model 41 up and running for a couple of months with no problems.

I checked my patch list against yours, and I the only ones that I didn't find
on yours are 100359-06 and 100584-03. Both fix system freeze problems.
Maybe
a model 51 system does a watchdog reset when one of these occurs.

My best guess is that there is something wrong with your cpu. Since it is
new,
I'd have Sun replace it.

ftp to sunsite.unc.edu, go to /pub/sun-info/sun-fixes
and get the file SunInfoPatchDB.lis for perusal. There's
a few kernel patches in there, to say the least.
