The Answer:

Install patch 100513-02 (tty jumbo patch).

It was available at the ftp site.

Many suggestions were to use nohup or to direct the output to a file
(or /dev/null), but users will not always do this. When the user signs
off, any processes they were running in background that were not started
with nohup should be terminated. But this was not happening.
