Thanks to all who responded!

It turns out that my problem (biff does not notify user
of incoming mail, then a big core file is dumped in
/usr/spool/mail) only happens to users whose names
are 8 characters long!! The Sun bug number is 1035603,
and the patch number is 100272-04. It's a bug in
in.comsat. Another mystery solved!
