SUMMARY: 9-track tape drive won't read

Hello Sun folks. This summary has been delayed by my other work,
for which I apologize:

A while ago I asked for help with a Cipher 9-track
tape drive that would write but not read. The main
suggestion was to contact the manufacturer. Cipher's
tech support person sent me the man pages on cleaning
the drive (for reasons too boring to explain, we don't have
the manuals) and told me to call Sun. Sun's official
position is that they don't support that drive, sorry,
and good luck. Since the drive continued to _write_
tapes successfully, and the people we were sending them to
could read them (we have no need to read tapes here except
as a check that they have written successfully), this one is
on the back burner. If anything else turns up, I'll let you
know. Thanks to

Mark Wiederspahn (markw@utig.ig.utexas.edu), who suggests that
the firmware may be the problem

Kevin Sheehan (ups!kalli!kevin@fourx.Aus.Sun.COM), who pointed
me at /sys/scsi/targets/st_conf.c (which looks okay to my inexpert
eye)

Geert Jan de Groot (geertj@ica.philips.nl), who suggested a new
SCSI board (if I had a budget, I'd try this)
