This was a simple case of RTFM. I had read tip(1), but not rlogin(1).

The answer is that '~' is an escape character in both tip and rlogin. So
when I typed "~.", it was rlogin instead of tip which saw it and exited.

Solutions:
1) Use "~~." to exit tip when in rlogin.

2) Put "escape=#" in "~/.tiprc", where '#' is a different character to
use as an escape character in tip.

3) (Mine) Alias rlogin to "rlogin -e" which will change the rlogin
escape char to NUL (^@), since I have never needed to escape from an
rlogin (else I would have know the answer :-).
