First off, thanks to all who replied. And sorry it took so long to get
this summary posted. I just saw another similar question posted over
the weekend, so I thought I had better get my act together.

What follows are all of the replies to my original query asking for
recommendations for a UPS for a Sun.

I got a few new leads. . . . Thanks

Mike.

I like APC's units (American Power conversion).
They have all types of units, from the basic UPS, to full power conversion
units where it re-generates 120VAC (these are medical type units).
They have dumb and smart units that can shut down the system before
it runs out. The better ones also do a great job of 'cleaning' the incoming
power.

I don't work for them.......but I like they better than some of the others

Hello Mike,
I believe that BEST from Necedah, Wisconsin makes some that have a
connection from the UPS to the serial port of the Sun. They package a shutdown
script with it also. That's all I know of.

We have a deltec 2.4kva unit with software that monitors the UPS and starts a shutdown after a user-definable amount of time on battery. I can't remember the name of the software (it's 3rd party, not by deltec), but Deltec would know...

I'm doing the same thing right now. Look at DELTEC (800)854-2658, (619)291-4211. They have a 1000VA PowerRite UPS with 18 minute backup at full load with serial communication. They quoted $900 plus tax and shipping.

Some info follows. A summary will be greatly appreciated.

UPS is made by Alpha Technologies, 1-800-421-8089 US 206-647-2360 fax 206-671-4936

also: The Back UPS, 800-800-4APC, they have stabilisers and UPSes. The UPS has a network interface and knows SunOS; when the battery is low the UPS will initiate shutdown on the Sun. They have 240V versions too.

Two local vendors selling their products are: 310-559-8717, 310-394-7997.

Most any UPS sold for LAN server applications will do this.

Typically they have a serial port which does something when the power goes out.

One easy hack for any ups is to hook up a 110V (or whatever your supply voltage is) relay to the supply side of the UPS (the incoming power) so that the contacts (isolated from the coil, of course) will close when power goes off. You hook the contacts between the DTR and the DCD pins of a server serial port. A blocking open on the port will succeed when the power goes off, and then you can initiate a shutdown or whatever.
