This is only a summary of what I've learned so far since the problem
has broadened in scope. Originally I was having problems with dbxtool
not echoing commands and crashing with xview errors. Suggestions
included: try from /bin/sh rather than /bin/csh; check
LD_LIBRARY_PATH; don't background the task; kill off the window you
invoked from; restart the window system. No joy from these so I put in
a call to Sun and was able to come up with a work-around.
The key was that we use xterm (from X11R5) rather than cmdtool or
shelltool. For some reason starting a cmdtool from the xterm and then
starting dbxtool from inside the cmdtool worked! I also discovered
that shelltool had similar problems to dbxtool unless invoked from a
cmdtool! The only unusual part of our setup is that we use the X11R5
xdm to fire up xnews via a home grown script derived from
$OPENWINHOME/bin/openwin. Perhaps bypassing xinit as I do is causing
problems although I find it odd that so far only dbxtool and shelltool
are affected. Can anyone offer any suggestions? How do others use
xnews under xdm?
