All of whom were on the right track with the printer problem I
  asked about The original probelm:
> We have just upgraded a 3/160 from 4.03 to 4.1.1
> We have 5 Epson Printers (various flavors of FX-) attatched
> to an ALM-2 board.
> under 4.03 we used the following line in printcaps to get
> the system to respond to START/STOP from the printers
> ms=-tabs, -parity ixon
> following the upgrade, the printers exhibit the following
> behavior:
> After printing the equivalent of 3 - 3 1/2 pages of solid
> text, the printer stops, however all seems normal when
> its status is checked and jobs remain in the print queue
> If the printer is taken off line and then put back on line
> with the printer control switch, the jobs resumes printing
> until another 3 - 3 1/2 pages of text has been printed.
> no data is lost.

John Valdes even correctly noticed that I had referred to an
ALM-2 when I meant an ALM-1.

At any rate the following patch fixed our problems:

Problem Description:

This patch corrects the behavior described in Sun Bug No. 1044721.
Systems running SunOS 4.1 with ALM (Systech MTI) boards can experience
flow control problems on these serial ports. The system will not
recognize an incoming XON character after receiving an XOFF character,
which causes the port to appear frozen. Typing ^S^Q will reenable

It turned out that we we also having trouble on four serial
ports that have connections to a University maintained modem
swith. This was fixed with the following patch.

Patch-ID# 100315-01

Problem Description:

BUGID: 1056787

Serial ports with software carrier and HUPCL do not drop DTR upon
last close. This behaviour was changed in Sun OS 4.1.1 relative
        to previous releases.

As those who believed I knew what I was talking about when I identified
the card as an ALM-2 pointed out, the Jumbo tty patch addresses
this behavior with the ALM-2:

Patch-ID# 100513-02
Keywords: ALM2, serial port, hangs, printer hangs, XON, XOFF, TIOCCONS re-direct
ion security console pty dialin dialout drops DTR NULL, panic Bad Trap TIOCSTI
Synopsis: SunOS 4.1.1;4.1.2;4.1.3: Jumbo tty patch
Date: 02/Dec/92

SunOS release: 4.1 4.1.1 4.1.2 4.1.3

Thanks for the help, are printers and dialin lines are now once again
funcioning normally.
