That's quick!
First respons a straight bull's eye! It turned out that the
GENERIC_SMALL kernel we had configured ought to be expanded.
That's happened now and the SPARCprinter SPARCprints happily.
Thanks ever so much to our colleague

Make sure you're running with an ASYNCHIO & LWP capable kernel. If you're
running a standard 'GENERIC_SMALL' kernel you'll have this problem.
i.e. Make sure the config file you used to generate your kernel contains
the lines:
basil:/sys/sun4c/conf (33) Yes Dear? cat /etc/motd
SunOS Release 4.1.2 (Basil) #1: Fri Nov 6 09:41:28 EST 1992
basil:/sys/sun4c/conf (34) Yes Dear? more Basil (editted)
#
# The following two options are needed for asynchronous I/O.
#
options LWP # kernel threads
options ASYNCHIO # asynch I/O (requires LWP)
#
This should be in the doc. for NeWSprint.
Hope this helps,
Pauline
It did Pauline, hartstikke bedankt!
