SUMMARY: Sun IPC can't open boot device

Hi all,

Thanx for all the responses. The problem could be solved. The disk was exchanged for a new one and the boot from the tape could be startet after patching the known bug in the MMU code in the EEPROM.
Steve Hanson and Robert Brown have sent the right solution:
SOLUTION SUMMARY: The panic is due to a bug in the MMU initialization code
in the PROM. At the ok prompt, before booting MUNIX,
                     enter the following command:

                        ok 75 fff0.0000 smap!

This will correctly initialize the MMU and allow the boot
                     to succeed.

Thanx again to all who has answered. This list is really great.

My original question was:
>We have had a power fail and as a result we have on one of our IPCs a boot problem. It's a 4/40 with 12 Mbyte RAM and SunOS 4.1.1 on it.

>It's also not possible to boot from tape. Thereby comes the following message:

>panic: mmu_getpmg
>rebooting
>Probing Memory Bank #: 1 2 3 4 5
>Can't open boot device

>I have tried probe-scsi and the result was that only the tape on target 4 was found. The internal disk is usually target 3 and was not found.
>I've tested also the fuses on the motherboard of the IPC and it seems all OK.

>Do you have an idea?

Bug in the MMU code in your EEPROM.

Try the following
SRDB ID : 2819

SYNOPSIS : SPARCstations panic booting 4.1.1 MUNIX from QIC

DETAIL DESCRIPTION : SPARCstations panic booting 4.1.1 MUNIX from QIC

SOLUTION SUMMARY : The panic is due to a bug in the MMU initialization code
in the PROM. At the ok prompt, before booting MUNIX,
                     enter the following command:

                        ok 75 fff0.0000 smap!

This will correctly initialize the MMU and allow the boot
                     to succeed.

SYMPTOMS : panic: mmu_getpmg

PRODUCT : booting

Hans,

The problem you are having is a known bug. There are two ways to handle this. The easiest is to go into new command mode by typing n at the > prompt. Then type 7f fff0.0000 smap! This will hold through resets but not power cycles and only affects booting from tape. Once the system is loaded, there will be no more problems. The other way to take care of this is to put any 4Mb simms in the first bank and any 1Mb simms "behind" the 4Mb ones. I suggest doing the first thing I mentioned first.

Have a good day,

check the SCSI fuse -- its a little round jobby (2 amp I believe) located directly behind the SCSI connector on the motherboard (F0801).

If you move the disk to another system, can the system boot from it?

Does the disk boot up?

Is the cable OK?

Can you use that tape drive to boot from tape on a different system?

It does sound like a bad disk.

Bonjour Hans, If probe-scsi failed to see target 3, you still have a problem at the disk level(Thus your boot attempts will fail to be able to open the default boot address which is your internal disk - scsi target #3, sd0).

Since probe-scsi did find target4(your tape drive), the scsi initiator on your mother board is ok. Open up your IPC and turn it off, then on. Put your ear as close to the drive as you can. If you here it spinning up(whirrring, then a little grinding noise), then there is a problem with a scsi controller chip on the mother board, or on the controller board on the drive. If the drive does not spin up, you might try hitting it - or replacing it.

Try to disconnect the drive(unplug from mother board scsi cable, and the power cable) Then try booting from tape: hit Stop(L1)+A, >n, ok boot tape. Once you have the miniroot loaded, carefully plug the drive back onto the motherboard scsi bus(do this FIRST!), then plug the power(carefully) back onto the drive. Then rebuild the OS on the drive if needed.

Good Luck!

If the internal disk doesn't show up using probe-scsi then its controller may have gone bad. We had the same problem here with a SPARC 1+ refusing to boot after a power fail and the disk was bad. Try removing the drive from the unit and then booting from tape, or maybe you can try booting across the net.

My experience with SCSI on a variety of machines is that if one device in the chain is bad you may have problems with other devices; for example with Macintoshes if you have a SCSI scanner and you don't turn it on the Mac won't boot even if every other device is turned on.

Hope this helps

I think this is the same as the problem I had. The tape drive was on its side. When I turned it rightside-up, it worked.
