Basically it appears to be a problem that SUN is aware of and is producing a
patch for. Also, a special group within SUN has done a port of X11R5 and is
providing a binary distribution on opcom.sun.ca which I have ftp'd and appears
to be working OK. Thanks to the following people who answered my query.

There's a lengthy article in the OPCOM newsletter (Sun's Operation
Commitment, their customer Solaris 2.x support group) about just
exactly this. There's a lot more to it than just compiling! If no
one else can help you out, ask your Sun salesperson to put you in touch
with OPCOM, or I could send you a copy of the newsletter, maybe.

robert,
this is a known problem that Sun has a bug fix for. It is not yet available
on any server at this time. I heard it should be out some time this week.
I will post to the net when I get the number unless someone beats me to it.

While I don't have any idea how to go about compiling X11R5 under Solaris 2.0
(which won't be very simple), you can FTP a binary copy from opcom.sun.ca
in the directory /pub/x11r5, or in /pub/tars/x11r5.tar.Z.
