After I posted my summary, this arrived from Alan Arndt:
I never saw your first request but I just had the same problem and
it was that the console window had been closed (under openwin 2.0) and
enough messages had piled up that the buffer for that window was full.
So SU was hanging waiting to write to the console buffer. As soon as I
went over to the server and had the user open his console window it
spewed out line of junk and my su worked. For now on he leaves his window
OPEN!
