Some people suggested a new MAKEDEV, but that didn't help. A hint from

We suppose that sunupgrade was not successfull with his job, so we ended up with some
mixture of 4.1.1b and 4.1.3 files in kvm/sun4c. We did a new installation of the
sun4c part of 4.1.3 with add_services on our server (all our clients are dataless)
and after rebuilding and installing new kernels on the clients everything seems to
work now (including cat $FILE >/dev/audio) :-)
