Thanks everybody for your help sofar, only no luck this time.
THe problem looks weirder by the minute: it now appears to be
user-dependent rather than system dependent as I first said..
(See try # 1: I used another login on the other machine.... oops...)
below the original posting + some answers.
A. I forgot to mention in my original posting that I DID run install-openwin.
B. I followed your suggestions and checks:, that didn't yield any results
C. When I run loadmodule as root, or as a few other users, it works!
So I checked permissions, access rights, umasks, environment variables,
but stil no luck. I believe I am overlooking something very obvious.

What are the permissions on the excutable loadmodule? It should be setuid to root like this:
$ ls -lg loadmodule -rwsr-xr-x 1 root daemon 24576 Jul 31 21:37 loadmodule

Just a guess. Is the kernel built with the VDDRV option to allow modloaded drivers?

I had a similar problem when I installed OW 3.0 a while ago. It turned out that my problem was that /var/tmp was a symbolic link to /tmp. A file named loadmodule.out is created both in /tmp and in /var/tmp. I don't know if they differ, but when I made /var/tmp a "real" directory everything worked fine.

How do the permissions on /var/tmp compare to a system where it works? And/or /tmp?

Check your modload list with modstat, If you have three modules loaded already you will need to add more loadable module area's for more modules. If you need a more detailed description on how to do this please let me know.
