Woops, in the summary I posted last night I said I had received
no answers from anyone. I did, in fact, receive an answer,
from Nancy.Howes@Eng.Sun.COM (Nancy Howes).
My query was:

: You can change the font sizes for the strings
: in the panel items by using the -scale or
: -font cmdline option when invoking cm.

: in the canvas display. They are hard coded into

It was the fields in the canvas display whose size I wanted to change.
