enclosed my summarty looks like there are loads of boxes
which are coming pretty cheap and if you don't have a PC
to use a a server they look good...

My original question:

I was mostly interested in devices from Milan and Microplex. You may be able to
find my summary at a sun-managers archive.

If you have NCD X-terminals you can use their serial ports as printer ports.

What we do here is have an Ethernet to Appletalk bridge, and print using SunTops running on the Sun. The printers are connected via appletalk (if your printers don't have appletalk, then this doesn't help you), and we have full connectivity between our Suns, printers, and Macs. Also, since we have our own company WAN, all tied together with Cisco's, we have full appletalk connectivity to all our sites around the world. I can print a file from a Sun, to a printer in Zimbabwe (I think we have an office over ther :-)

The MiLAN boxes seem to work pretty good - not sure what current price is. For HP printers, I prefer the HP network card since this eliminates one of the vendors and minimizes support pain.

Chris

Prices have recent;y fallen to $400 with educational discounts at one local vendor (R&D: 206-882-8490) and I don't think even with the pounds current problems it should cost #1000.

These are US prices of course (and we're 8 hours behind you).

We use a dedicated old 286 to serve two printers that get fairly heavy usage. It works w/o a hitch....

We've been using MiLAN's printserver called Fastport. Supports one parallel and one serial device (simultaneously, I think). Costs under $1000 in U.S.!

MiLAN's phone number: (408) 752-2770 FAX: (408) 752-2790 Sales Dept. (408) 752-2770 Address: MiLAN Technology 894 Ross Drive, Suite 105 Sunnyvale, CA 94089 email: inqinfo@milan.com

Disclaimer: I don't have anything to do with MiLAN. Just a happy customer...

we are using Ip spooling devices from Axis with up to two centronics + two V.24 interfaces per devices, which run quite good. WE use these devices for printers, which only have centronics or where two or more printers are "close" together. Price: ca. 4500.- DM

The HP III si printers, which stand alone are connected via the HP ethernet cards, which are quite inexpensive and fast. Price: ca. 1000 DM

Thanks for your interest in our product line. The FastPort is a very good product for your configuration. It is equipped with 10Base2, 10Base5, and 10BaseT ports. There are two printer ports; one parallel and one serial. FastPort works in a UNIX environment, and we offer source code if you have a unique operating system. FastPort can be spooled directly under FTP software's TCP/IP using public domain utility "iprint" which is bundled with FTP. We support TCP/IP, but by the end of this year we will begin shipping Novell IPX, and FastPort will be a dual protocol. We have two UK resellers of our product: They are Q Associates at 44 635 248181. The contact is either David Cue or Andy Griffiths. Also PCI resells our product. The contact is Dave Sheppard at 44 793 618130. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you require any further information. My direct line is 408-752-2757 and my email is pauline@milan.com. Regards, Pauline Turski/Account Mgr/ Int'l Sales.

We run our printers on Cisco terminal servers. Transcript allows you to specify that a printer is at a particular IP address and port number. This works perfectly for a terminal server. Transcript will connect to the port that has the printer hanging on it.
