I received an overwhelming deluge of responses (see below for a
listing), many of which were very useful.
First of all, I'd like to apologize to anyone who was offended by my
implication that OpenWindows II or III is not `true X'. Here I am
guilty of passing on prejudice without actually knowing the truth
myself! Several of you sugested that OpenWindows is `true X', or at
least compatible with it.
I had looked for xv in my installation of OpenWindows but did not find
it - and I'm sure that this does not surprise most of you. Thanks to
Frank Peters (fwp@CC.MsState.Edu) I was able to obtain copy of xv from
export.lcs.mit.edu:/contrib
I was easily able to install xv on our Sun SPARC 1+ (SunOS 4.1)
platform, and have been using it daily since!
Apparently, the xv src is also available from
ftp.uu.net [michael@ts.go.dlr.de (Michael Klein)]
src.doc.ic.ac.uk [Anil.Katakam@att.com (Anil Katakam)]
and I'm sure many other locations.
xv is _not_ the only way in which one can view gif files on the platform
that I described above. Several respondees mentioned
xloadimage
and
snapshot
although I was so pleased with xv, that I didn't try these out!
For those who are interested in obtaining `current' meteorological
information:
1. There is a shell script that comes with xv (i.e.
xv-2.21/unsupt/getweather) that allows one to access current weather
information. I can send a copy to anyone whose's curious. (I haven't
tried this yet either ... !)
2. Also, one can access weather and satellite information from UCAR.
(In fact, it was a colleague's display of this information that
started me on this gif trek in the first place!) I have the following
in my .netrc file,
machine unidata.ucar.edu login anonymous password user@domain
macdef init
binary
cd images
lcd /tmp/weather
get wxmap.gif
get ustcon.gif
get cvis.gif
get cir.gif
get hgt500mb.gif
quit
The above images display
wxmap.gif synoptic weather
ustcon.gif temperature contours
cir.gif infrared satellite imagery
cvis.gif visible satellite imagery
hgt500mb.gif 500 mb pressure surface
I obtain this info automatically via the line
0 7,9,13,15 * * * ftp unidata.ucar.edu
in my crontab file.
I received several useful responses within several tens of minutes
from the time that my message was posted on this eforum. I was able
to accomplish my task in much less time, and with far greater ease,
than I anticipated.
