Sorry for the long delay with this summary, but it has taken this long to
"solve" the problem.
We wound up sending one of the tapes off to Sun. They got the same error
in the same place, in the same file, in the same block.
The thing that fooled us is we had 2 software distribution tapes from 2
different companies that we could not read on our 630, but could be read
on a 670.
Sun claims that the 670 must have more sensitive read circuitry.
FYI, if you have problems reading tapes from Verdix or IDE, it really could be
the tapes.
