Summary: adding a route?

========================= Original question ====================================

the network looks like this.

-------------- | router between | --------------- |----- | and |----- | |
-------------- | | ---------------
Sparc 2 machines ------------------- All Kinds of stuff
Sparc 2 machines Vax, Honeywell, PC

Now we have just added another machine to the network
and I can ping it from the router. However I cannot ping it from
any machine on the net. I tried adding a route with

                route add <newmachine> <router>

but to no avail. Is there something that I am missing here.

The router incidentally is a Sparc 2 with two ethernet cards. One
having a IP number and the other having a
number. All Sparc machines are running SunOs 4.1.2.

I neglected to mention that the machine I was trying to add to the
net was a Sparc 1. As it turned out it did not make much difference.

replies ranged from:

1) make sure the new machine knows about the net
2) add a new route to the routing tables of the machines on the 200 and 201 net
3) put in a defaultrouter
4) check and make sure the netmask is the same throughout the network
5) check the metric hop count
6) try using ripquery
7) update the hosts database on the net
8) make sure the in.routed is still running

As it turned out there were two things wrong.

1) the netmask was set wrong
2) the broadcast address was set to broadcast using 1's and not 0's

An ifconfig on the ethernet interface fixed things. I guess the old adage about
checking the obvious first holds here, as well as the old advice about not
doing anything when you are tired.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply and my apologies for being so late with
this summary.
