Regarding my request for information on:
>We have here a small subnet with 2 Suns and 4 Macintoshes (among others).
>Our Mac users have accounts on the Sun, where they receive e-mail.
>They want to read this e-mail on their Macs, and reply to it if needed.
>How can this be done ?
I received some 70 replies.
Most of you recommended Eudora version 1.2.2 for the Mac
available via anonymous ftp from ftp.cso.uiuc.edu in /mac/eudora,
which uses the SMTP and POP3 protocols over MacTCP.
System Requirements are Macintosh System 6.0.4 or later. (7.0 is fine.),
MacTCP (or the Communications Toolbox & Communications Tools) and
POP3 and SMTP servers on the Sun.
The POP3 protocols are implemented with popper version 1.831, available by
anonymous ftp to ftp.cc.berkeley.edu, in the pub/popper subdirectory.
I now run both and my users are VERY impressed.
Steve Dorner, the author of Eudora, also e-mailed me and stated :
>I have left the University, and am now employed by Qualcomm, Inc.. While
>I will get a copy of your mail, you should change your records to show
>my new address, sdorner@qualcomm.com.
>I am still developing Eudora, and Eudora will still be free. If your mail
>is regarding Eudora, I will try to answer it.
Others mentioned :
QuickMail over a gateway with GatorMailQ and a Mac to use as the MailCenter,
QuickMail, with a (VAX-based?) server,
TCP/Connect II from InterCon Systems (provides telnet/ftp but has email builtin)
MacPOP and PC POP Electronic Mail Packages,
MacMS, a Macintosh-based mail reading program developed at Stanford
University's SUMEX facility, which uses the IMAP protocols.
Techmail from net-dist.mit.edu (18.72.0.3) (supplied in the MH distribution)
CAP 6.0, available via anonymous ftp from munnari.OZ.AU ( 128.250.1.21),
