A couple of weeks ago I asked about the swapping I saw on my
16Mb ELC. This occured even when the system wasn't doing anything.
I got a lot of responses of people giving me advise or telling me
they saw the same thing on their system.
We are talking about a Sun ELC, 16Mb RAM, running SunOS 4.1.2 and OW 3.0
The advise I got was to :
- buy more memory
- Stop using X/News and try X11
In the mean time I had reported this problem to my local Sun organisation
and they came up with the following (unsatisfying) answer:
Starting with SunOS 4.1.1 there has been a bug (id 1052542) which caused
swapping activity every 30 seconds when using a swap file (with swapon).
It seems that when modifying SunOS 4.1.1 to 4.1.2 this bug (virus?)
spread to the standard swap partition software.
In fact he said not to worry about the swap activity shown by perfmeter/vmstat.
Personaly I find this most unsatisfying since I will constantly be wondering
if the swapping that I see is "for real" or just some stupid bug.
Thanks to those who replied I hope you find this usefull.
