This is a brief summary of the responses I received. I make no claims
to their accuracy. They are just opinions!

                                C++ Compilers

Name Company Debugger Library
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
g++ 2.2.1 GNU gdb libg++ 2.1

        Free. Many people recommended it. It is an actual C++ compiler,
        not just a preprocessor for C. Although GNU does not provide
        support, a company called Cygnus does: (617) 494-1325. It is
        similar to AT&T's cfront 3.0. The software is available from
        anonymous ftp at prep.ai.mit.edu under pub/gnu/gcc-2.2.1.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
objectcenter Centerline interactive & regular ???

        This was also recommended by several people. It has an interactive
        debugger, which will apparently pick up errors that normal
        debuggers will not catch. However, it requires 24MB of memory in
        order for it to work correctly (the debugger). It also has a
        regular debugger. Someone said that a work group license for this
        software costs about $3,500.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Energize Lucid ??? ???

        Very few comments, other than to say that they use it. Lucid is
        supposed to be sending me a package on it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
??? ParcPlace ??? ???

        The only comments I got were bad.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
cfront 2.1 Sun ??? various outside srcs.

        This is a C++ preprocessor which is based on AT&T's cfront 2.1.
        There were quite a few good comments about this, but speculation
        as to what will happen with the next OS release, as it will not
        contain a c compiler.
