Well, that was relatively easy to find. Thaks to A. Feigin, M. Saltenik
and - in particular - A. Hird for a nice reference configuration.

The mailer WAS properly configured. I had the central mailer delivering
all the addresses that were not treated locally. The problem was in a
line of /etc/sendmail.cf that said:

# optimize names of known ethernet hosts
R$*<@$%y.LOCAL>$* $#ether $@$2 $:$1<@$2>$3 user@host.here

I have just commented the line out so that the mailer sends ALL to the
central router (excepted the local delivery).
