Well, that didn't take long. I let my colleague, Ed Hartnett, post
the query about changing console to ttya from my workstation after his
was packed away for a trip to the Azores. The overwhelming answer was
to deactivate the getty on ttya in /etc/ttytab. It is somewhat
unfortunate that Ed did not identify himself in the post, leading to
some confusion. I hope this summary will also clear that up. The
typos in the original query were due to him. The typos here in the
summary and in any e-mail replies I made to those who answered are
