Once upon a time I wrote a program to drive an HP7580A from a Vax (VMS),
which used XON/XOFF, and only 3-wire links since the plotter was
some distance from the computer and used fixed modems on internal phone
lines. As I recollect the default setting of the plotter was an ENQ-ACK
protocol. I had to send an initialisation string containing an excape sequence
to set the plotter to XON-XOFF.
Another possible cause of trouble would be if the OS inserts extra CRLFs in
the output. LF is a command delimiter; it would cause the current command to
be truncated. In my program I generated commands on separate lines, so didn't
run into that problem.
