for providing useful answers even before my message boomeranged back to me.

The answer is to put a script name in the 'lo' field of the getty entry for
the modem line. The script then does any processing (in the one I have
just thrown together, checking a modem password and exec'ing /usr/bin/login
if the passwd is correct).
