SUMMARY: Sun Prestoserve on 4/370 not SUPPORTED?

From: Real Page (rpage@bigbrother.matrox.com)
Date: Mon Mar 23 1992 - 00:25:37 CST

Sorry to be so late, but anyway here is the summary:

Sun sold me a Prestoserver VME board to use in my Sun 4/370.
They did not even see that the Sun product is only supported on the 400 series
(4/470 and 4/490).

Some says it should work with the Legato Prestoserve, but even technical support
at Legato say there is some problem with the 4/370. You need to have a ECO
level 16 on the CPU board. (even that I am not certain, I don't have my note)

Tired of getting Voice mail at Legato Sales, and never getting somebody to
call me back, I am shipping the Sun Prestoserve back to Sun.

Because of the low rate of success from comp.sys.sun.*, I decided to
ask that question here:

We just acquired Sun Prestoserve VME board with a tape labeled:
2.0 Sun Prestoserve Sun-4/470 Sun-4/490 SUNBIN
Part Number: 700-2733-10 Rev.A

I installed the software, the board and when I tried to boot I received
the following message:
Feb 21 22:09:10 hilda vmunix: This version of Prestoserve operates only with 400 Series systems

So I ask Sun to get some explanation. They tell me to call Legato.
So I call Legato to get some explanation. They tell me they do not support
Sun Prestoserve.
So I call back Sun. They tell me it is no supported on the 4/370.
So what?

Why did they put that check in the software. Legato say they
wrote the driver for Sun4, no mention of specific series.

Is-it possible to get it to work on the 4/370 or I will need to buy the
software from Legato

I will summarize the answer (if any!)

I don't know which software you have, but we have Prestoserve running
on a 4/380, and apart from the packaging that is identical to a 4/370.

We were told by Sun that the VME-based Prestoserve card is only
available for the 4/470 and the 4/490 when we were enquiring getting
one for our 4/390. However, the VME formfactor is the same in both
the 4/490 and the 4/390 as well as the arch so why should Prestoserve
not work ? One Sales rep said that VME Prestoserve was not intended for
the 4/390 but a Technical per-sales support guy said that it was
possible to put a VME Prestoserve onto a 4/390.

We will be glad to know if its possible ? Please Summarize.

Martin.

We had the same prob when we upgraded our sun3/280 -> sun4/330

and wanted to put sun presto on it, sun said it won't work.

We tried Legato's driver with sun presto, it worked.

[ Regarding "Sun Prestoserve on 4/370 not SUPPORTED?", fourx!coyote.matrox.com!rpage writes on Feb 25: ]

Power on the 4/300 was problematic as I recall, that *may* be the reason
that Sun checks it. I can't think of any machine differences other than
that that justify it.

Ooooo - there is one - the 4/300 uses the le0 interface, and the 4/300 uses
the ie0 interface, that may be the problem...

Subject: Your Prestoserve query on the net

Hello Real!

What a coincidence!! We put the same accelerator into one of our
Sun-4/390s yesterday. Lo and behold, when we tried booting the
390 up, we noticed the same little note that you did
"This version of Prestoserve blah, blah, blah..."

Have you had any positive replies to your query about making
the Prestoserve work on your 4/370? I would be very interested
in whatever feedback you receive.

Thanks a bunch!

The deal is: Leagto makes Prestoserve and Sun resells it. The
agreement was that Sun would only sell it for the 4/470 and
Legato will handle the 4/370. Sun's code simply checks to see
what systems it's on, and doesn't run if it's a 4/370. It can/would,
they just don't. Legato, selling their own product, has no interest
in supporting their competition (Sun). If you can get the Legato
code, it will work on the Sun Prestoserve in the 4/370.

Good luck,
