My original question was :
Why was I getting the following error when running a remote
dump:
...
DUMP: Change Volumes: Mount volume #2
DUMP: fopen on /dev/tty fails
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted
The answer as I suspected came from

The only work-around is to rlogin to machine_B then issue the rdump
directly. Dump, being interactive, insists on having a tty to provide
input when it asks for another tape.
