Can I see a summary of NIS vs. DNS?

For a large network (dozens of domains, thousands of machines), I'd like to be pointed to a discussion of
        1) what DNS buys
        2) what problems it has

I'm very familiar with YP/NIS, but I never really learned much about DNS...
