Apparently, this question was asked and summarized to sun-managers recently
so I'm sorry for rehashing it. Here's a short summary; if anybody needs
more information I have it, thanks to many replies.
Basically, the drive isn't "supported" by the Sun driver in SunOS 4.1.1, but
it is useable in the high-density 8500 mode. SunOS 4.1.2 does fully support
the new features of the 8500 drive.
Under SunOS 4.1.1, with the stock driver:
- you can write in 8200 mode to a tape which has been written to previously
in 8200 mode,
- you can write in 8500 mode to a new tape or a previous 8500 tape,
- you can NOT use the high speed search mode for locating filemarks.
One replier included a patch to st_conf.c which allows high density to be
used for rst0/1 and low density for rst8/9.
Third party drivers are available from:
APUNIX
CITA Technologies
Delta Microsystems
and probably others that I don't know of.
