I feel quite silly - it was a ghost emacs process that had lost its
controlling tty and was stealing the input I typed. If I actually used
emacs maybe I would have recognised the message.
Thanks to Dave <bianco@cs.odu.edu> for pointing out the obvious. (I
have seen this before several times, except in other cases input was
only stolen from one particular terminal).
