Thanks for all the replies.

The bottom on line on the 5Hz cycling is that it is a feature. The
TCP handler tries to bundle data into larger packages to improve
efficiency. The feature can be turned off by setting TCP_NODELAY with
setsockopt. This reduces the latency to a consistant 1-2 ms.
